Speaking and teaching
Speaking, and training teams in practice
Most of my teaching has not been from a stage. For eleven years practice owners have brought me into their own clinics to work with their teams and with them directly. I also speak at conferences. If you are putting an event together or you want someone in with your team, this page is what I cover and how to ask.
- Why pain persists, and what that asks of a clinician
- Assessment beyond structure
- Running a practice that does not run you
What I speak about
01
Why pain persists, and what that asks of a clinician
The clinical talk. Why treating structure alone sometimes does not settle a case, what the other layers are, and what changes in your assessment if you take them seriously. Aimed at clinicians rather than the public. It describes how to look at a person; it does not claim outcomes and I do not present it as though it does.
02
Assessment beyond structure
A working session rather than a lecture. What I ask, in what order, and why. This is the material the Elaris Method came out of, and it is the talk practice owners most often ask for when they want their associates to get better at histories.
03
Running a practice that does not run you
The practice-building talk. What Jo and I got wrong for the first few years, what we changed, and the parts nobody teaches you at college. No income figures, no promises, and no case studies presented as anybody’s individual track record.
The background behind the clinical talks is about Steve Davison, and my published research.
In practice
Eleven years of being brought into other people’s clinics
The work I am asked to do most is not a keynote. A practice owner gets in touch because something is not working, or because they want their team trained properly rather than told to try harder, and I go in.
What that usually means: time with the owner on what they are actually trying to build, then time with the team on the parts of the job that are learnable, then a plan they can run without me. Some of it is clinical, some of it is entirely about how a practice operates.
I have been invited to do this across the UK, in the South West, the South East, Manchester, Stockport, Newcastle and widely in between, and abroad in Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Norway, Finland and the United States.
Most of the people in the room are practice owners: working with practice owners.

Asking him to speak
I am available for conference and seminar talks, for in-practice team training, and for working directly with an owner and their team over a period rather than a day.
Tell me who the audience is, what you want them to leave with, and roughly when. I will tell you whether I am the right person, and what it would involve.
The books are on his books.
